The SPELL framework was developed by the National Autistic Society to support autistic people and those around them. At NeuroMixed Couples Counselling, we adapt this approach specifically for neurodiverse relationships – where partners may experience, process, and communicate in different ways. SPELL provides a gentle, practical structure that helps reduce anxiety, build mutual understanding, and create safe, fair conditions for connection and growth.

Core Principle

SPELL is not about “fixing” anyone – it is about creating the right conditions so both people can show up as themselves, and connect better.

S – STRUCTURE

Predictability, clarity, and clear boundaries reduce anxiety and make connection easier.

Set clear, agreed times, topics, and time limits for conversations or sessions
Give advance notice for difficult discussions or changes to plans
Use clear, literal language – avoid sarcasm, idioms, or vague hints
Break large issues into small, manageable steps
Agree on a shared “pause signal” if either person feels overwhelmed
Write down agreements, next steps, or key points for future reference

P – POSITIVE APPROACHES

Build on strengths, focus on solutions, and affirm effort rather than only addressing difficulties.

Acknowledge each other’s strengths, efforts, and what already works well
Frame feedback as “what helps me” rather than “what you do wrong”
Set realistic, achievable goals together – small wins build confidence
Separate behaviours or patterns from the person: “this dynamic is hard” not “you are difficult”
Celebrate progress, not just perfection
Assume good intent unless proven otherwise

E – EMPATHY

Truly understand each other’s experience – see the world through both neurotypes.

Ask “What is this like for you?” instead of explaining how things “should” be
Validate feelings before problem‑solving: “That makes total sense, I can see why that hurts”
Learn each other’s sensory, energy, and communication needs
Avoid phrases like “you’re overreacting” or “just calm down” – instead say “this feels too much right now”
Respect that different is not wrong – different brains process and connect in different ways
Practice self‑empathy too – you cannot support each other if you are running on empty

L – LOW AROUSAL

Keep nervous systems regulated so you can stay connected and think clearly.

Notice early signs of overload: silence, fidgeting, raised voice, or shifts to literal thinking
Agree on safe ways to pause, step away, or reset without blame
Choose the right time and place – avoid heavy talks when tired, overstimulated, or stressed
Reduce distractions: put phones away, use a quiet space, minimise background noise
Keep your voice calm, pace steady, and body language open
Use “I feel… I need…” statements instead of blame‑focused language

L – LINKS

Create consistent connections across all areas of life and support.

Keep words, actions, and agreements consistent at home, in sessions, and with family
Link therapy work to daily routines – make skills practical and easy to apply
Connect with trusted support: peers, mentors, or professionals who understand neurodiversity
Share agreed approaches with others involved, only with consent
Link past patterns to present moments without getting stuck in blame
Build a shared “language” for your relationship – for example: “pause”, “overload”, “processing time”
